Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • cup white whole wheat flour
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Wet Ingredients

  • cup unsweetened applesauce
  • cup brewed, cooled coffee
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Add-ins

  • ¾ cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, coating it with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flours, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the wet ingredients: applesauce, coffee, canola oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips and pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes, until the edges are set and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  6. Let the brownies cool in the pan for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.
