Ingredients

The meat mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

The sauce

  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard or yellow mustard or Dijon mustard
  • to taste salt and freshly ground black pepper

The buns

  • 8 pieces sandwich buns, split

Instructions

  1. 1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, combine the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook until the meat is mostly browned, about 5 minutes, then drain well.
  2. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. 3. Pour the sauce over the drained beef and stir until evenly coated.
  4. 4. Simmer the mixture uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. 5. Serve the sloppy joe mixture in the split sandwich buns.
