Ingredients

The chili

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 lbs ground turkey (93% lean)
  • ¾ cup onion (finely diced)
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 28 ounce can diced tomatoes
  • 3 8 ounce cans tomato sauce
  • cups chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • teaspoons salt (divided use)
  • ¾ teaspoon pepper (divided use)
  • 2 15 ounce cans kidney beans (drained and rinsed)

Toppings

  • to taste shredded cheese
  • to taste sour cream
  • to taste green onions
  • to taste tortilla strips

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground turkey, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in diced onion and cook until softened.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook briefly.
  5. Incorporate diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, and spices into the pot.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add kidney beans and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, then serve with toppings.
