Instructions
- Combine warm water, honey, and yeast in a mixer bowl and let stand for 10 minutes.
- Add salt, melted butter, margarine, and eggs to the mixture and mix well.
- Gradually add bread flour, one cup at a time, until the dough is soft and pulls away from the bowl.
- Knead the dough in the mixer for 7 minutes, then let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Divide the dough into four equal parts or two for larger loaves.
- Prepare baking sheets with parchment paper and non-stick spray.
- For each portion, divide into thirds, roll into ropes, and braid them together.
- Place the braided dough on the baking sheets and cover to rise for 1 to 1½ hours until doubled.
- While rising, whisk together egg and vanilla, then preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Brush the risen dough with the egg wash and sprinkle with seeds if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
- Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
