Ingredients

The bread

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 ounce bread machine yeast
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • ¾ cup butter, melted
  • ¼ cup kosher margarine, melted
  • 4 large eggs
  • 11-13 cups bread flour

The egg wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Optional toppings

  • sesame seeds
  • poppy seeds

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, honey, and yeast in a mixer bowl and let stand for 10 minutes.
  2. Add salt, melted butter, margarine, and eggs to the mixture and mix well.
  3. Gradually add bread flour, one cup at a time, until the dough is soft and pulls away from the bowl.
  4. Knead the dough in the mixer for 7 minutes, then let it rest for 10 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into four equal parts or two for larger loaves.
  6. Prepare baking sheets with parchment paper and non-stick spray.
  7. For each portion, divide into thirds, roll into ropes, and braid them together.
  8. Place the braided dough on the baking sheets and cover to rise for 1 to 1½ hours until doubled.
  9. While rising, whisk together egg and vanilla, then preheat the oven to 350°F.
  10. Brush the risen dough with the egg wash and sprinkle with seeds if desired.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  12. Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
