Ingredients

The filling

  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons ricotta or mascarpone cheese
  • 1 lemon zest and juice
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 5 tablespoons white granulated sugar
  • 2 apples baking apples (e.g., Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Gala)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

For assembly and icing

  • 1 box puff pastry
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Mix the cream cheese, ricotta, lemon zest, salt, and 4 tablespoons of sugar until smooth.
  3. Slice the apples and toss them with lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into a rectangle.
  5. Cut notches in the pastry and slice strips down both sides.
  6. Spread cream cheese filling down the center and top with apple slices.
  7. Fold the pastry over the filling, alternating sides with the strips.
  8. Chill in the freezer for 15 minutes, then brush with egg wash.
  9. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Mix powdered sugar and milk to make icing, then drizzle over the warm danish.
