Ingredients

The pasta and sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 cups milk
  • 12 ounces medium shell pasta, uncooked
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese

The vegetables

  • 2 cups steamed broccoli florets

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat and whisk in the flour for about 30 seconds.
  2. Add the water and whisk until smooth and slightly thickened.
  3. Stir in the milk and continue whisking until combined.
  4. Add the shell pasta, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper, then bring to a simmer.
  5. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is done.
  6. Reduce heat to low and stir in the cheddar cheese until the sauce is smooth.
  7. Finally, mix in the steamed broccoli and serve.
