Ingredients

  • 1 pound strawberries, hulled and halved
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and butter a 10-inch (25 cm) cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Hull the strawberries and cut them in half.
  4. In an electric mixer, beat the butter and 1 cup of sugar until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  5. Mix in the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually mix in the flour mixture on low speed.
  7. Transfer the batter to the prepared cake pan and arrange the strawberries on top, cut sides down.
  8. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of sugar over the strawberries.
  9. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 325°F (150°C) and bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 1 hour.
  10. Let the cake cool, cut into wedges, and serve immediately.
