Homemade Gravy

Ingredients

  • 4 cups broth or stock, preferably low-sodium
  • 10 tablespoons butter
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon bouillon paste (optional)
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper

Instructions

  1. Warm the broth or stock until steaming and keep it warm.
  2. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add the flour and cook, whisking constantly, until the roux is golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  4. Whisk in the bouillon paste if using.
  5. Slowly ladle in the warm broth about ½ cup at a time while whisking constantly.
  6. Continue adding broth until fully combined; the mixture may look crumbly at first.
  7. Once all the broth has been added, simmer the gravy for 3 to 4 minutes, whisking constantly until thick and silky smooth.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve immediately or keep warm to serve later.
