Ingredients

The sauce

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound mild Italian sausage
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • to taste salt and pepper

The ricotta mixture

  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • ¾ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

For assembly

  • 16 ounces ziti pasta, cooked
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • as needed cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and coat a 9"x13" pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium-high heat and add ground beef and sausage, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the meat for 3 minutes, breaking it into small pieces, then add onion and cook for another 5 minutes until browned.
  4. Drain excess grease, then add garlic and cook for 30 seconds before adding marinara and tomato sauce, simmering for 5 minutes.
  5. In a bowl, mix ricotta, egg, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese until blended.
  6. Layer 1/3 of the sauce in the baking pan, followed by half of the cooked ziti, dollops of the ricotta mixture, and 1/3 of the sauce.
  7. Add another layer of ziti, the remaining sauce, and top with 2 cups of mozzarella cheese.
  8. Cover and bake for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbly and cheese is melted.
  9. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.
