Instructions
- Cut six to eight one-inch-thick slices of bread.
- Butter one side of each slice and arrange them buttered side up in a buttered baking dish.
- Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and salt, then pour over the bread slices.
- Chill covered until the bread absorbs the custard, at least one hour or up to one day.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and bring the mixture to room temperature, then sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake uncovered until puffed and golden, about 20 to 25 minutes. Serve immediately with fruit, syrup, and powdered sugar if desired.
