Baked Overnight French Toast

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf bread (13- to 14-inch long)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1⅔ cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • 3 tbsp sugar

For Serving

  • to taste maple syrup
  • to taste berries
  • to taste powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Cut six to eight one-inch-thick slices of bread.
  2. Butter one side of each slice and arrange them buttered side up in a buttered baking dish.
  3. Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and salt, then pour over the bread slices.
  4. Chill covered until the bread absorbs the custard, at least one hour or up to one day.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F and bring the mixture to room temperature, then sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Bake uncovered until puffed and golden, about 20 to 25 minutes. Serve immediately with fruit, syrup, and powdered sugar if desired.
