Ingredients

The French Toast

  • 1 loaf crusty artisan-style sourdough or French bread (about 16 ounces)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups low-fat milk or milk of choice
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

The Topping

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

For Serving

  • to taste pure maple syrup
  • to taste salted or unsalted butter
  • to taste fresh blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries (optional)
  • to taste sliced bananas (optional)

Instructions

  1. Coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray or butter and tear the bread into 1-inch pieces, placing them in the dish.
  2. Whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl, then pour the mixture over the bread.
  3. Press the bread into the liquid until saturated and let it sit for at least 10 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F and mix the topping ingredients together, sprinkling it over the French toast.
  5. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until the top is crisp and the inside is set but moist. Serve with toppings.
