Ingredients

Quick Marinara Sauce

  • 1 28-ounce can whole San Marzano tomatoes
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 7 cloves garlic, peeled and slivered or minced
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 ½ teaspoons sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • pinch crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 large sprig fresh basil or ¼ teaspoon dried basil

Meatball Sandwich

  • 4 French rolls
  • Butter
  • Garlic powder
  • 12 to 16 large fully cooked and warmed meatballs
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil optional for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat the meatballs until hot.
  2. Prepare the marinara sauce by cooking garlic in olive oil, then adding tomatoes, water, salt, sugar, oregano, red pepper flakes, and basil. Simmer until thickened.
  3. Butter both sides of the French rolls and sprinkle with garlic powder. Bake until lightly toasted.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches by adding sauce to the rolls, topping with meatballs and mozzarella cheese, then bake until the cheese melts.
