Ingredients

The meatballs

  • ½ pound ground beef
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper

The marinara sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound tomato sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt

To assemble

  • 8 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls hoagie rolls

Instructions

  1. Combine all meatball ingredients in a bowl and mix until combined, then shape into 1-inch balls.
  2. Pan-fry the meatballs in a non-stick pan over medium heat for 5-6 minutes until browned, then remove them from the pan.
  3. In the same pan, add olive oil, onion, and garlic, and cook until fragrant, then add the remaining sauce ingredients and bring to a simmer.
  4. Add the meatballs back into the sauce and cook through.
  5. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F, slice the hoagie rolls in half, and fill them with meatballs and marinara sauce, then top with mozzarella cheese.
  6. Place the rolls open-faced on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts, then serve immediately.
