Ingredients

The apples

  • 6 lbs apples, cored, sliced, and peeled

The flavoring

  • 2 tbs lemon juice
  • ¾ cup maple syrup, or to taste
  • 4 pieces cinnamon sticks

The water

  • 3 cups water (for soaking apples)
  • 2 cups water (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples by slicing, coring, and peeling them, placing them in lemon water to prevent browning.
  2. In a large pot, combine the prepared apples, maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, and water.
  3. Cover the pot and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes until the apples are tender.
  4. Remove the cinnamon sticks and mash the apples to your desired consistency.
  5. Return the cinnamon sticks to the applesauce and simmer uncovered for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. If canning, process in a hot water bath for 20 minutes.
