Ingredients

The cookie dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup dutch cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp red food coloring

The sugar coating

  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. 1. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. 2. Cream the softened butter with the brown and white sugars using a mixer until creamy.
  3. 3. Add the eggs, vanilla, and red food coloring, and beat until combined.
  4. 4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until a dough forms.
  5. 5. Chill the dough for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  6. 6. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. 7. Mix the white sugar and powdered sugar in a small bowl.
  8. 8. Roll 2 tablespoons of dough into balls and coat each in the sugar mixture.
  9. 9. Place the coated dough balls on the baking sheets about 1 inch apart.
  10. 10. Bake for 12-14 minutes until the cookies are crackled, then cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
