Easy Homemade French Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant or active dry yeast
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or other cooking oil
  • 5 ½ – 6 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a mixer bowl; let it activate if using active dry yeast.
  2. Add salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour; mix well.
  3. Gradually add 2 ½ to 3 more cups of flour until the dough forms a soft ball.
  4. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
  5. Choose a rising method: either let the dough rest in the mixer for 10 minutes and stir down, or transfer to a greased bowl and let rise until doubled, about an hour.
  6. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a loaf.
  7. Score the top of each loaf with a sharp knife.
  8. Cover the loaves and let them rise until puffy, about an hour.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (or higher for a crispier crust).
  10. Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
