French Bread Rolls

Ingredients

  • cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon instant or active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar or honey
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil or other neutral-flavored oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3½ to 4 cups all-purpose or bread flour

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, sugar, oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix and gradually add more flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Knead the dough for 4-5 minutes in a stand mixer or 7-9 minutes by hand until soft and slightly tacky.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled, about 1-2 hours.
  5. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a greased countertop.
  6. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape them into balls.
  7. Place the rolls in a greased 9x13-inch pan, spaced about ½ to 1 inch apart.
  8. Cover the rolls with greased plastic wrap and let them rise until puffy, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  9. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  10. Bake the rolls for 15-17 minutes until lightly browned.
  11. Brush the tops with butter immediately after baking.
