Easy Dinner Rolls

Ingredients

The dough

  • sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 packages rapid rise (instant) yeast
  • tsp salt
  • cups whole milk
  • 1 large egg

The egg wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp whole milk or plant-based milk

Toppings

  • flaky salt

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown, then let cool.
  2. Grease a large bowl with vegetable oil.
  3. Mix flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a large bowl or stand mixer.
  4. Heat milk to 120°F - 125°F, then add to dry ingredients and mix.
  5. Add the egg and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Gradually mix in ½ cup of the cooled browned butter and knead until combined.
  7. Transfer dough to the greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  8. Butter a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  9. Press the dough into an 8x10-inch rectangle and cut into 12 equal pieces.
  10. Shape each piece into a ball and place in the baking dish.
  11. Cover rolls and let rise until doubled in size, 40 minutes to 1 hour.
  12. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  13. Prepare the egg wash by whisking the egg and milk together, then brush over the rolls.
  14. Bake until golden brown, about 18 minutes.
  15. Brush with remaining browned butter and sprinkle with flaky salt.
  16. Let cool in the pan for 30 minutes before serving.
