Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup butter, softened or melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant or active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons salt
  • 4 ¼ to 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour

For finishing

  • as needed none additional butter, for brushing hot, baked rolls

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk until steaming and tiny bubbles form around the edges.
  2. Pour the milk into a stand mixer bowl and add water, butter, and sugar. Let cool until warm.
  3. Stir in the yeast and let rest for 5-7 minutes until foamy.
  4. Add the egg, salt, and flour, starting with 3 ¾ to 4 cups, and mix until the dough forms a soft, sticky ball.
  5. Knead the dough for 5-6 minutes until soft and smooth.
  6. Let the dough rise in a warm spot until doubled, about an hour.
  7. Grease a 9x13-inch pan and punch down the dough. Divide into 12 equal pieces and roll into balls.
  8. Place the dough balls in the prepared pan, spacing them apart, and cover to rise until doubled.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F and bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes until golden.
  10. Butter the tops of the rolls immediately after baking.
