Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons Platinum Yeast from Red Star instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour

Optional topping

  • 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough by whisking warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar, then let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining sugar, egg, butter, salt, and 1 cup of flour, then mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Knead the dough for 5 minutes until it is soft and slightly tacky.
  5. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, divide it into 14-16 pieces, and shape into smooth balls.
  7. Arrange the rolls in a greased baking pan and let them rise for about 1 hour.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Optionally, brush the warm rolls with honey butter before serving.
