Ingredients

Roux

  • 3 tablespoons whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour

Dough

  • 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons dry milk powder
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the roux by mixing milk, water, and flour until smooth, then cook over low heat until it thickens slightly.
  2. Let the roux cool before using it.
  3. In a stand mixer, combine the roux with all dough ingredients and mix on low speed until combined.
  4. Knead the dough on medium-low speed for 5-6 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 90 minutes until puffy.
  6. Divide the dough into 9 portions, shape into balls, and place in a greased baking pan.
  7. Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 50 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C), brush rolls with milk, and bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and serve warm.
