Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening (melted)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons fine salt
  • 3 ¾ cups bread flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 egg for brushing

For topping

  • ¼ cup butter (melted)
  • 1-2 teaspoons minced garlic (optional)
  • to taste flaky salt

Instructions

  1. Add the milk, beaten egg, honey, melted shortening, melted butter, salt, flour, and yeast to the bread machine in the specified order.
  2. Select the dough cycle and start the machine.
  3. Prepare a 2 ¾ quart baking dish by lining it with parchment paper.
  4. Once the dough cycle is complete, gently deflate the dough and divide it into 12 pieces, covering the unused dough with plastic wrap.
  5. Shape each piece into a ball by stretching and folding the sides over the center, then flip them seam-side down.
  6. Arrange the balls in the baking dish and cover them with a damp towel. Allow them to rise in a warm place for 45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Brush the rolls with the beaten egg and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through.
  9. Let the rolls cool in the dish for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  10. Melt the butter in a small saucepan, adding garlic if desired, and brush it over the rolls. Sprinkle with flaky salt before serving warm.
