Ingredients

  • cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup light cream or milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Whisk together sugar, salt, and cornstarch in a large bowl.
  2. Add egg yolks, milk, and light cream to the mixture and whisk until combined.
  3. Pour the mixture into a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  4. Cook while whisking continuously for 10-12 minutes until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  6. Transfer the custard to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface.
  7. Refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight before serving.
