Gingerbread Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups white whole wheat flour

  • 2 ½ to 3 cups all purpose flour

Filling

  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 3 ounces cream cheese
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and melt the butter.
  2. Combine all dough ingredients except all-purpose flour and add the milk and butter.
  3. Mix on low, then gradually add all-purpose flour until a shaggy ball forms.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in volume, about 2 hours.
  6. Prepare the filling by mixing the sugars and spices.
  7. Roll the dough into a rectangle, brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with filling.
  8. Roll up the dough and slice into 12 segments.
  9. Arrange rolls in a pan and let rise again until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 25 to 35 minutes.
  11. Prepare the frosting by mixing cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and spices.
  12. Frost the rolls and serve warm.
