Ingredients

The brownies

  • 2 cups unsalted butter
  • 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Kahlua (optional)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ cup Nutella

The salted coffee caramel

  • 1 cup black coffee
  • 1 ¼ cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup canned coconut milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon Kahlua
  • to taste Maldon salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the salted coffee caramel by boiling coffee and brown sugar until reduced, then add coconut milk and butter, cooking until thickened.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  3. Melt butter and milk chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring until smooth.
  4. Whisk in sugar and instant coffee, then add vanilla, Kahlua, and eggs, mixing until smooth.
  5. Stir in cocoa powder, flour, and salt until just combined.
  6. Pour half of the brownie batter into the prepared pan, dollop with Nutella, and drizzle with three-fourths of the caramel.
  7. Top with remaining brownie batter and bake for 25-30 minutes until set.
  8. Allow to cool, then drizzle with warmed caramel and sprinkle with salt before serving.
