Ingredients

The beef

  • 1 ¼ lbs flank steak, thinly sliced

The vegetables

  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

The sauce

  • ¼ cup oyster sauce
  • ¼ cup beef broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

The cooking essentials

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, divided use
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat and cook the broccoli for about 4 minutes until tender.
  2. Add the ginger and garlic, cooking for an additional 30 seconds before removing the broccoli from the pan.
  3. Wipe the pan clean, increase the heat to high, and add the remaining tablespoon of oil.
  4. Season the steak with salt and pepper, add it to the pan in a single layer, and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned.
  5. Return the broccoli to the pan and heat for 2 more minutes.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together the oyster sauce, beef broth, sugar, sesame oil, and soy sauce.
  7. Mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water in a small bowl.
  8. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables, cook for 30 seconds, then add the cornstarch and bring to a boil.
  9. Cook for 1 more minute until the sauce starts to thicken and serve immediately, preferably with rice.
