Ingredients

The filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons minced chives (optional)

The wrappers and coating

  • 24 pieces wonton wrappers
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix the cream cheese, sugar, and onion powder until well combined.
  2. Place a wonton wrapper on a flat surface and add a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center.
  3. Brush the edges of the wonton with the beaten egg.
  4. Bring two opposite corners together and pinch to seal, then repeat with the other two corners.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (about 4 inches deep).
  6. Fry 5-6 wontons at a time for 3-5 minutes, turning as needed until golden brown.
  7. Drain on paper towels and repeat with remaining wontons.
  8. Sprinkle with chives and serve hot with your choice of dipping sauce.
