Classic Marinara Sauce

Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a medium heavy pot over medium heat.
- Cook the onion, stirring occasionally, until very soft, about 8–10 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until very soft, about 5 minutes; stir in basil.
- Add the tomatoes, crushing them with your hands as you go; season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 1 hour.
- Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
- Let the sauce cool before storing.
