Homemade Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • cup onion, finely diced
  • 2 ½ teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 28 ounce can whole San Marzano tomatoes, coarsely crushed or chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 sprigs fresh basil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  4. Add the tomatoes with their juices, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, fresh basil, and water.
  5. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  6. Reduce heat to low and cook for 20 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Remove and discard the basil sprigs.
  9. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator.
