Homemade Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

The sauce

  • 2 cans (28 oz) San Marzano tomatoes
  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1 ½ cups finely chopped yellow onions
  • 5 - 10 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 4 sprigs fresh basil

For serving

  • to taste shredded Parmesan or Romano cheese
  • to taste chopped basil

Instructions

  1. Crush the tomatoes in a mixing bowl with your hands and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat and sauté the onions until softened.
  3. Move the onions to one side of the pan, add the garlic to the other side, and sauté until fragrant.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes and olive oil to the pot, season with salt, and add the basil.
  5. Bring the mixture to a light boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until thickened.
  6. Remove the basil and serve the sauce warm with pasta, topped with cheese and basil.
