Grilled Apple, Cheddar, and Mustard Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 slices hearty white bread
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional)
  • to taste grainy mustard or Dijon mustard
  • 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • slices peeled Fuji or Granny Smith apples

Instructions

  1. 1. Heat a cast iron skillet or grill pan to medium.
  2. 2. If using mayonnaise, mix it with the softened butter in a small bowl.
  3. 3. Spread the butter mixture on one side of each slice of bread.
  4. 4. On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread mustard, then layer with one slice of cheese, apple slices, and another slice of cheese.
  5. 5. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
  6. 6. Fry the sandwich on both sides until the cheese melts and the bread is golden brown, about 2 to 4 minutes per side.
