Ingredients

The scone dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, frozen
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • cups mini chocolate chips

For finishing

  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (for brushing)
  • optional coarse sugar (for sprinkling)
  • optional confectioners’ sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the frozen butter and add it to the dry mixture, combining until crumbly.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the wet ingredients together and then add to the dry mixture along with the chocolate chips.
  4. Form the dough into a ball and press it into an 8-inch disc, cutting it into 8 wedges.
  5. Brush the scones with heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  6. Refrigerate the scones for at least 15 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
  8. Bake the scones for 22-25 minutes until golden brown.
