Ingredients

The scones

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, frozen
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • cups cinnamon chips
  • to taste coarse sugar for topping

Coffee Icing

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 tablespoons strong black coffee
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Grate the frozen butter and combine it with the dry mixture until crumbly.
  3. Whisk the wet ingredients in a separate bowl and combine with the dry mixture.
  4. Form the dough into a ball, then shape it into an 8-inch disc and cut into wedges.
  5. Brush the scones with heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  6. Refrigerate the scones for at least 15 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  8. Arrange the scones on a baking sheet and bake for 22-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Prepare the coffee icing and drizzle over the warm scones.
