Ingredients

The sweet potatoes

The glaze

  • ½ cup unsalted butter

  • ¾ cup white sugar or sweetener
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  1. Heat a Dutch oven or stockpot on medium-high heat and add the butter.
  2. Once melted, add white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt, stirring to combine.
  3. After the sugar has melted, add vanilla extract and stir until the glaze thickens.
  4. Pour in the water and stir until the glaze caramelizes.
  5. Add the sliced sweet potatoes, stirring until they are fully coated in the glaze.
  6. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 35-45 minutes until the potatoes are soft.
  7. Check for doneness by piercing the sweet potatoes with a fork; they should be tender.
  8. Stir before serving, allowing the glaze to thicken further upon standing.
