Easy Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients

The sweet potatoes

  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes

The glaze

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar or sweetener
  • ¾ cup white sugar or sweetener
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup water (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into rounds about ½ to 1 inch thick.
  3. Add the sweet potatoes to a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  4. Heat a saucepan on medium-high heat and melt the butter.
  5. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, white sugar, brown sugar, salt, and vanilla to the melted butter and stir.
  6. Pour the candied glaze mixture over the sweet potatoes.
  7. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil, stir, and baste the sweet potatoes.
  9. Cover again and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until soft.
  10. Let sit for 15 minutes before serving to thicken the glaze.
