Harissa Meatballs

Ingredients

The sauce

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ½ yellow onion diced
  • to taste none kosher salt
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons harissa paste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 24 ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • ½ cup water

The meatballs

  • 1 pound ground chicken or turkey
  • 2 teaspoons harissa paste
  • 2 tablespoons minced Italian parsley
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons toasted pine nuts

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a medium pot and sauté diced onion with salt until translucent.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook briefly before setting some aside for the meatballs.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, harissa paste, and cumin, then blend with diced tomatoes and water until smooth.
  4. Return the sauce to the pot and let it simmer.
  5. In a bowl, combine the reserved onion/garlic mixture with ground chicken or turkey, harissa paste, parsley, egg yolk, salt, and cumin.
  6. Mix well and scoop out meatballs using a cookie scoop.
  7. In a pan, heat oil and brown the meatballs on all sides.
  8. Transfer the browned meatballs to the sauce and simmer until fully cooked.
  9. Garnish with parsley and pine nuts before serving.
