Ingredients

The cheese sauce

  • 2 T butter
  • 1 T flour
  • ¾ c. milk
  • a small pinch nutmeg
  • a pinch mustard powder
  • c. gruyere cheese
  • c. grated parmesan cheese
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. pepper
  • ¼ tsp. cayenne

The main ingredients

  • ½ loaf fresh French bread
  • ⅓-½ lb. shaved deli ham
  • 2 slices provolone cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in flour until smooth.
  2. Gradually add warm milk and bring to a quick boil, then simmer for about five minutes.
  3. Stir in gruyere and parmesan until melted, then whisk in spices and combine.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  5. Cube the French bread and pack it into an oven-safe dish.
  6. Pour cheese sauce over the bread, then add the shaved ham evenly.
  7. Top with provolone slices and drizzle with remaining cheese sauce.
  8. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes and serve hot.
