Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • cups unbleached all purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • teaspoons rapid-rise or instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • to coat nonstick vegetable oil spray

Filling

  • ¾ cup golden brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

Glaze

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make the dough by warming milk and butter, then mixing with flour, sugar, egg, yeast, and salt.
  2. Knead the dough until smooth and let it rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the filling by mixing brown sugar and cinnamon, then roll out the dough and spread with butter and the cinnamon mixture.
  4. Roll the dough into a log and cut into 18 slices.
  5. Place the rolls in greased baking dishes and let them rise again until nearly doubled.
  6. Preheat the oven and bake the rolls until golden brown.
  7. Cool the rolls slightly before making the glaze by mixing cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, and vanilla.
  8. Spread the glaze over the warm rolls and serve.
