Ingredients

The filling

  • 8–10 cups apple slices
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

The crumble topping

  • ½ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup chopped walnuts
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pie crust according to your recipe up to step 5.
  2. Mix the apple filling ingredients in a bowl and set aside to release juices.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  4. Roll out the chilled pie dough and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  5. Fill the crust with the apple mixture, leaving some liquid behind.
  6. Make the crumble topping by mixing the ingredients until crumbly, then sprinkle over the apples.
  7. Bake the pie for 20 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes.
  8. Let the pie cool for 3 hours before serving, and serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.
