Ingredients

The base

  • 1 cup raw, unsalted cashews
  • 4 cups water

The spices

  • 1 tablespoon ground turmeric
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 10 twists freshly ground black pepper
  • a tiny pinch fine salt

The sweeteners

  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cashews until the water runs clear.
  2. In a blender, combine the cashews with 2 cups of water.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients (turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, pepper, salt, honey, and vanilla).
  4. Blend on a low setting and increase the speed until creamy, which may take 2 minutes or longer depending on your blender.
  5. Blend in an additional 2 cups of water until creamy.
  6. Taste and adjust the sweetness if necessary.
  7. To serve cold, pour over ice; to serve warm, gently heat in a saucepan until steaming, stirring often.
