Mulled Wine

Ingredients

The base

  • 2 bottles (750 mL) red wine
  • ¾ cup orange juice
  • 2 pieces oranges (sliced into wheels and halved)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar or honey or maple syrup

The spices

  • 12 whole cloves
  • 4 pieces cinnamon sticks
  • 4 pieces star anise

Instructions

  1. Combine wine, orange juice, orange slices, sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise in a large non-aluminum pot over medium-low heat.
  2. Simmer the mixture until steam begins to rise and it is hot, about 10 minutes, without boiling.
  3. Strain the spices or remove the spice bundle and keep the mulled wine warm over low heat until serving.
  4. Serve warm, garnished with additional orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise if desired.
