Mulled Wine

Ingredients

The base

  • 1 bottle dry red wine, such as merlot
  • 2 cups apple cider

The spices and garnish

  • 1 whole navel orange
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 6 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons ginger juice
  • as desired cranberries, for garnish
  • as desired rosemary sprigs, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Slice half of the orange into thin rounds for garnish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the red wine, apple cider, and juice from the remaining half of the orange.
  3. Add the sliced orange wedges, cloves, and cinnamon sticks to the pot.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat and simmer on low for 20 to 30 minutes without boiling.
  5. Stir in ginger juice and adjust sweetness with more apple cider if desired.
  6. For a spicier flavor, add more whole spices and simmer for an additional 15 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat, strain, and serve in a pitcher or mugs with garnishes.
