Mulled Wine

Ingredients

The base

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1 medium orange

The spices

  • 10 whole cloves
  • 8 whole star anise
  • 6 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons ginger juice (optional)

The garnishes

  • as desired rosemary sprigs
  • as desired cranberries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the orange by peeling strips of zest and slicing the remaining half into rounds for garnish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the wine, apple cider, orange juice, orange zest, cloves, star anise, and cinnamon sticks.
  3. Bring the mixture to a low simmer, being careful not to boil, and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Stir in ginger juice if using, and adjust sweetness or spice levels to taste.
  5. Remove from heat, strain the mixture, and serve in mugs with garnishes.
