Ingredients

The asparagus

  • 2 lbs Asparagus
  • 2 teaspoons Olive Oil
  • 2 teaspoons Kosher Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Pepper

The sauce

  • 4 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 2 ½ Tablespoons Flour
  • 2 cups Half and Half
  • 1 ¼ cups Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Zest
  • ½ cup Panko Bread Crumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Wash the asparagus and trim the stems to fit in the baking dish.
  3. Arrange the asparagus in a greased 9x13 baking dish, alternating the direction of the spears.
  4. Brush the asparagus with olive oil and sprinkle with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.
  5. In a saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat, then whisk in the flour and cook until golden.
  6. Add the half and half to the saucepan, whisking until thickened.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in ¾ cup of parmesan, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, remaining pepper, and lemon zest.
  8. Pour the sauce over the asparagus, leaving the tips exposed.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, adjusting time based on asparagus thickness.
  10. Mix the remaining melted butter with the bread crumbs and remaining parmesan.
  11. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the asparagus halfway through baking.
  12. Broil for a few minutes if you want the breadcrumbs more golden.
  13. Serve immediately.
