Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Wash the asparagus and trim the stems to fit in the baking dish.
- Arrange the asparagus in a greased 9x13 baking dish, alternating the direction of the spears.
- Brush the asparagus with olive oil and sprinkle with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.
- In a saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat, then whisk in the flour and cook until golden.
- Add the half and half to the saucepan, whisking until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in ¾ cup of parmesan, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, remaining pepper, and lemon zest.
- Pour the sauce over the asparagus, leaving the tips exposed.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, adjusting time based on asparagus thickness.
- Mix the remaining melted butter with the bread crumbs and remaining parmesan.
- Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the asparagus halfway through baking.
- Broil for a few minutes if you want the breadcrumbs more golden.
- Serve immediately.
