Heart Shaped Strawberry Hand Pies

Ingredients

The crust

  • 2 9-inch rounds prepared pastry pie dough

The filling

  • ½ cup Strawberry Pie Filling
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • to taste none coarse Turbinado sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix the strawberry pie filling with lemon zest and set aside.
  3. Roll out the pie crusts to 1/8-inch thickness and cut out 24 to 28 heart shapes.
  4. Brush half of the hearts with egg wash, then place a teaspoon of filling in the center of each.
  5. Cover with the remaining hearts, pressing edges to seal and venting the tops with slits.
  6. Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar.
  7. Bake for 12 minutes until golden and bubbling, then cool on a wire rack.
