Ingredients

  • 2 tbs olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 carrots chopped
  • ¾ pound ham, chopped into ½ inch cubes
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 6 cups water
  • 4 cups broth
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 lb dried split peas, rinsed
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet and cook onions, celery, and carrots until tender.
  2. Add ham and cook for another minute.
  3. Transfer the vegetables and ham to a slow cooker.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients to the crock pot.
  5. Cook on high for 4 to 5 hours or on low for 6 to 8 hours until split peas are tender.
  6. Remove the bay leaf and puree the soup with an immersion blender, leaving some chunks.
