Ingredients

  • 16 oz dried split peas
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 medium chopped onion
  • 2-3 cloves garlic
  • 2 large carrots
  • 1 smoked ham hock about 11 ounces
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • to taste black pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash and drain the split peas.
  2. Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil until soft.
  3. Transfer sautéed onions and garlic to the slow cooker.
  4. Add split peas, chopped carrots, ham hock, and chicken broth to the slow cooker.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours until the peas are tender.
  6. Remove the ham hock, season the soup with black pepper.
  7. Shred the meat from the ham hock and add it back to the soup.
