Ingredients

Crispy Tofu

  • 1 lb block of firm tofu, pressed for 30 minutes
  • 2 teaspoons light soy sauce or liquid aminos
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons sesame or regular oil

General Tso Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • ¼ cup light soy sauce or liquid aminos
  • ¼ cup brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • ½ teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup vegetable broth
  • to taste whole chillis or ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Coat the cubed tofu with soy sauce and toss to coat.
  2. Add garlic powder, sea salt, black pepper, and cornstarch to the tofu and toss again.
  3. Heat sesame oil in a pan over medium-high heat and add the tofu, cooking until crispy on all sides, about 8 minutes.
  4. In another pan, heat sesame oil and sauté ginger and garlic until fragrant.
  5. Add the remaining sauce ingredients to the pan, whisking to dissolve the cornstarch slurry.
  6. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 4 minutes until thickened.
  7. Add the crispy tofu to the sauce and stir to coat, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  8. Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and scallions before serving.
