General Tso Tofu

Ingredients

The tofu

  • 14 ounces extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons chili-garlic sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch

The sauce

  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

The stir fry

  • 3 tablespoons canola or grapeseed oil
  • 12 ounces broccoli florets
  • 1 medium red bell pepper
  • 5 large green onions
  • prepared brown rice for serving
  • toasted sesame seeds optional for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the tofu by freezing it for at least 3 hours, then pat it dry.
  2. Marinate the tofu with soy sauce, chili-garlic sauce, sesame oil, and honey, then coat with cornstarch.
  3. Mix the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet and cook the tofu until golden brown, then set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add more oil and stir-fry broccoli and bell pepper until crisp-tender.
  6. Add green onions, then stir in the sauce and tofu, cooking until thickened.
  7. Serve hot over rice, garnished with sesame seeds.
