Ingredients

The burgers

  • 1 pound 93% lean ground turkey
  • ¼ cup whole wheat panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 4 rings canned pineapple
  • 1 medium red onion
  • 4 whole whole wheat hamburger buns

The teriyaki sauce

  • ¼ cup reserved pineapple juice
  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Prepare the teriyaki sauce by combining pineapple juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, and ginger in a saucepan and bringing it to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry, add it to the sauce, and cook until thickened.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, panko, garlic, ginger, black pepper, cilantro, and some teriyaki sauce, then shape into patties and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the grill and oil the grates, then grill pineapple rings and onion slices until caramelized.
  5. Grill the burgers, brushing with teriyaki sauce, until they reach an internal temperature of 160-165°F.
  6. Let the burgers rest for 5 minutes, then serve on buns with reserved sauce, grilled pineapple, and onion.
